May 13, 2014At the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), our most important mission is to provide the high quality health care and benefits Veterans have earned and deserve. Secretary Shinseki has directed the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to complete a national audit of patient access and scheduling. In preparation for this audit, VHA Central Office learned on May 12 that a Durham VA Medical Center employee indicated that some employees at that facility may have engaged in inappropriate scheduling practices at some point between 2009 and 2012. If true, these scheduling practices did not comply with VHA’s policy on Outpatient Scheduling Processes and Procedures. A VHA audit team will be on site this week to assess current scheduling practices and determine if inappropriate behavior occurred. In the meantime, VHA has placed two Durham VA Medical Center employees on administrative leave pending the review of the allegations. A thorough investigation will be conducted based on the findings of the initial review and audit. VA takes any allegations about patient care or employee misconduct very seriously. If the allegations are true, the inappropriate behavior is unacceptable and employees will be held accountable.
