There are many factors determining travel eligibility and it is important Veterans with questions get accurate information. Veterans may call (919) 286–0411, Ext. 6237 with questions that are not answered on our website.
The Beneficiary Travel program provides eligible Veterans and other beneficiaries mileage reimbursement from their residence on record to the closest VA that offers the service by common carrier (plane, train, bus, taxi, light rail, etc.), or when medically indicated, “special mode” (ambulance, wheelchair van) transport for travel to and from VA health care, or VA authorized non-VA health care for which the Veteran is eligible.
If you meet the criteria below, you may be eligible for mileage reimbursement or special mode transport in association with obtaining VA health care services.

How to Apply
To improve efficiency and decrease Veteran wait times, Durham VA Health Care System has implemented a centralized system to process Beneficiary Travel Requests. Veterans can now submit their travel claim at any kiosk across our health care system, excluding those located at the Brier Creek Dialysis Clinic.
By using the kiosks, Veterans no longer must wait in lines to complete their transaction. BT claims processors receive the initial reimbursement request and complete the transaction quicker and with more accuracy. The new system centralizes the process, which increases the visibility for all claims and improves data collection, analysis and reporting.
Veterans may also apply for travel reimbursement by completing VA Form 10-3542 (Veteran/Beneficiary Claim for Reimbursement of Travel Expenses) and submitting the form directly to the clinic or service
where care was provided.
Please note, a Veteran must have a current physical address on file for their beneficiary travel request to be processed. Applications must be submitted within 30 calendar days from the date the travel is completed or the date the applicant is notified he or she is eligible for travel payments if the request is based on a change in eligibility.
Dispute a Payment
If a Veteran would like to dispute his or her payment, they can do so by completing the Durham VA Health Care System Beneficiary Travel Dispute Form (BT_DisputeForm.pdf). The form can be submitted via email online, to the VA clinic or department where care was provided, or to the Patient Advocate Office located on the first floor of the main medical center.
The mapping tool VA uses for beneficiary travel will now calculate the driving distance using the fastest route per Bing maps. This is a change to the Beneficiary Travel program that will make the distance determinations consistent with distance calculations under the Veterans Choice Program.
The current mileage reimbursement rate is $0.415 (41.5 cents) per mile for general travel. Scheduled appointments qualify for round-trip mileage. Unscheduled visits may be limited to return mileage only. Reimbursement will be paid for travel to the closest VA facility unless a different location was determined by VA.
