Durham VA now offering “self-referral” oncology scheduling for eligible Veterans - Durham VA Health Care System (DVAHCS) is proud to announce that the organization is one of the first VAs to offer eligible Veterans with active cancer the ability to “self-refer” to make an initial oncology appointment. Previously, Veterans had to receive a consult or referral from a primary care provider prior to scheduling an appointment with a cancer specialist, but through patient self-referral direct scheduling (PSDS), eligible Veterans with active cancer will be able to get enrolled and schedule an appointment to see a cancer specialist directly. New Greenville VA Health Care Center Opens Jan. 13 - Eastern North Carolina Veterans currently receiving patient care services at the Greenville VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic will now receive their health care at the newly constructed Greenville VA Health Care Center, starting January 13th. The new HCC address is 401 Moye Boulevard. Initially, Veterans will receive primary care and mental health services within the 116,000-square foot facility that is nearly seven times larger than the one it replaces. However, as staff and demand grow, specialty services including but not limited to women’s health, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, audiology, cardiology, orthopedics, optometry and dental services will be added. Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center Hires 15 New Mental Health Professionals - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that it has met the goal to hire 1,600 new mental health professionals outlined in President Obama’s August 31, 2012, Executive Order to Improve Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families. The Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) met the local goal to hire an additional 15 new mental health clinicians in support of the nationwide effort. “We worked diligently to hire qualified mental health clinicians and will continue to actively recruit for any vacant mental health positions so Veterans will get the care they need,” said Dr. John Shelburne, Chief of Staff at the Durham VAMC. The hiring of these positions provides Veterans with timely access to high quality mental health services,” Dr. Shelburne said. (06/12/2013)

VA’s Morehead City Clinic Closing Early - The Morehead City Community Based Outpatient Clinic will close at 12 p.m. Friday to prepare for the approach of Hurricane Irene. Construction Resumes for New Parking Garage - Great news! The construction for the Durham VA Medical Center’s new parking garage has resumed. The new garage will add 400 parking spaces to help Veterans easily access the medical center. World AIDS Day Celebration at the Durham VA Medical Center - Highlights included a guest speaker by AmeriCorps member Susan Lou. Performances also rounded out this event including those by the Durham VA Choir, a violin & piano duet with Susan Lou on violin and Chaplain Carl Clark on piano, and a reading by Susan Wilkins. Operation Cold Front - Operation Cold Front is a program by Voluntary Service Specialist Dave Grupy. The program is receiving donations from service organizations and private donors of new winter coats, gloves, scarves and hats. They will be distributed to our homeless and less fortunate Veterans.
