Durham VA Health Care System
Reporting Non-VA Emergency Room Visits
Beginning June 8, 2020, the Office of Community Care is requesting that all Veterans report their non-VA Emergency Department visits to the Department of Veteran Affairs within 72 hours of the start of emergency care
The care of Veterans is our primary mission. Our goal is to ensure that our Veterans are receiving the best care possible when and where they need it. Therefore, we want to make you aware of some upcoming changes to our policies concerning Emergency Medical Care.
Beginning June 8, 2020, the Office of Community Care is requesting that all Veterans report their non-VA Emergency Department visits to the Department of Veteran Affairs within 72 hours of the start of emergency care. Veterans should contact the VA at 1-844-724-7842 or by email at VHAEmergencyNotification@va.gov.
We want our Veterans to be sure to visit the nearest medical facility in the event of a medical emergency. A medical emergency is defined as an injury, illness, or symptom that without immediate treatment, you believe your life or health would be in danger. If you believe your life or health is in danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Veterans do not need to check with VA before calling 911 or before going to the emergency department. If you encounter an emergency, we encourage all Veterans to seek immediate medical attention without delay.
Promptly notifying the VA will allow us to coordinate necessary care or transfer to a VA facility and to ensure that administrative and clinical requirements for payment are met by the VA. The Veteran, a family member, a friend, or hospital staff member should contact the VA contact information listed above or the nearest VA medical facility. VA staff will also ensure that Veterans receive additional care without interruption.
